Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology(NIT), Jalandhar is a leading premier autonomous university in northern India. The Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar is one of the youngest of the 20 National Institutes of Technology of India. It was founded as a joint venture between the governments of Punjab and India, originally under the name Punjab Regional Engineering College, Jalandhar (PREC). The institution was established in 1987 as Regional Engineering College and on October 17, 2002, was given the status of National Institute of Technology (Deemed University) by the government of India under the control of Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi, in a bid to provide increased autonomy in decision-making.
